Content Gap Analysis

Content gap analysis is the practice of finding keywords and topics that competitors cover but your own site is missing, turning those blind spots into content opportunities. Using tools like Ahrefs or Semrush, you surface the search terms competitors rank for while you do not, then prioritize creating new content or improving existing pages.

  • Content gap analysis finds the keywords and topics competitors rank for while your site is absent, converting those gaps into content opportunities.
  • Gaps fall into two broad types: domain-level (topics only competitors cover) and page-level (the same topic, but competitors rank for more keywords with deeper pages).
  • Tools like Ahrefs Content Gap and Semrush Keyword Gap compare competitor domains and extract, in one pass, the search terms you do not rank for.
  • Prioritization weighs search volume, keyword difficulty, search intent, and business value so you tackle the high-impact, low-effort gaps first.
  • The scope now extends beyond traditional search to the "AI visibility gap" — prompts where LLM answers cite competitors but leave your brand out.

Overview

Content gap analysis identifies the keywords and topics competitors cover in search results but your site is missing, then converts them into opportunities to create new content or strengthen existing pages. Ahrefs defines it as the process of finding topics your competitors have covered while you have not, which lets you pull more traffic from existing content, uncover new topics worth covering, and win traffic away from competitors.

The core value is data over guesswork. Search terms a competitor already ranks for represent demand the market has validated, so the fact that you have no content in that space directly translates to traffic and conversion opportunities you are leaving on the table.

Two Types of Gaps

Ahrefs distinguishes two types of content gaps.

  • Domain-level gap: a competitor has content on a given topic and you have none at all. This calls for building new pages and covering new topics.
  • Page-level gap: you and a competitor both have a page on the same topic, but the competitor's content is more comprehensive and therefore ranks for more keywords. The fix is to expand your existing page with additional sections.

Keyword Classification by Tool

The major tools group your keyword gaps relative to competitors. Understanding how they classify keywords makes it easier to decide which ones to attack first.

CategoryDefinitionUse
MissingKeywords where every competitor you compared ranks but you do notLikely a market-essential topic, so review with top priority
WeakKeywords where you rank too, but competitors are well aheadQuick wins by strengthening existing pages
UntappedKeywords where at least one competitor ranks and you do notSurface differentiation and niche opportunities

This classification follows Semrush's Keyword Gap tool, which defines Missing as keywords "all your competitors rank for but you don't" and Untapped as keywords "at least one competitor ranks for but you don't."

Analysis Methods

The leading tools work as follows.

  • Ahrefs Content Gap: set the competitive analysis tool to "keywords" mode, enter your domain and your competitors (per the official guide you can compare up to 10 competitors), then click "Show keyword opportunities" to extract the list of keywords you do not rank for.
  • Semrush Keyword Gap: compare your domain against up to four competitors. Results can run into the tens of thousands, so narrowing by ranking band and keyword difficulty is essential.
  • Funnel and intent gaps: Search Engine Land separates keywords into informational (how-to and guides), commercial (comparison queries), and transactional (purchase queries). Mapping these intents to awareness (TOFU), consideration (MOFU), and decision (BOFU) stages reveals not just a keyword gap but which part of the buyer's journey your content leaves empty.

Setting Priorities

A tool can return thousands of keywords, so the step of narrowing them with filters and criteria matters most. The practical filters Ahrefs recommends in its guide are as follows.

  • Minimum monthly search volume of 20 to drop meaningless ultra-low-volume keywords
  • Keyword difficulty (KD) capped at 30 to identify low-hanging fruit you can rank for relatively easily
  • At least two competitors ranking in the top 10 to confirm demand
  • Exclude competitor brand names and irrelevant topics (including partial matches and misspelling variants)

Search Engine Land adds an effort-versus-impact lens, advising you to handle the high-impact, low-effort items — those that lift visibility substantially for little work — first. In practice it is effective to weight quantitative metrics like volume and difficulty alongside how directly a keyword ties to your business's conversions and revenue, that is, its business value.

Expansion in the AI Search Era

Increasingly, analysis extends beyond traditional search keyword gaps to visibility inside LLM answers. Semrush frames content gap analysis as finding both "search terms competitors rank for in traditional search but you don't" and "LLM prompts where your brand doesn't appear." In other words, the "AI visibility gap" — where competitors get cited in generative search answers from tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity while your brand is left out — is treated as another gap to close.

Execution Checklist

  1. Select two to four primary search competitors (favor direct competitors with comparable brand awareness and traffic).
  2. Enter your domain and your competitors into Ahrefs Content Gap or Semrush Keyword Gap to extract the keyword gaps.
  3. Narrow the list with filters for search volume (20+), keyword difficulty (e.g., KD 30 or below), and exclusion of competitor brand names.
  4. Classify each keyword as informational, commercial, or transactional and map it to a buyer's-journey stage to see which funnel section is empty.
  5. Handle domain-level gaps with new pages and page-level gaps by strengthening existing pages.
  6. Rank by high-impact, low-effort plus business value to build a roadmap.
  7. Where relevant, also audit prompts where competitors get cited in LLM answers but you are absent (the AI visibility gap).
  8. After publishing, monitor target-keyword performance with rank-tracking tools and benchmark against competitors.
