SERP Features

SERP features are the special elements that appear on a search engine results page alongside the standard organic (blue link) listings. Common examples include featured snippets, People Also Ask, knowledge panels, and local packs, each being an individual block within the page rather than the page as a whole.

Overview

Open a search results page and you rarely see nothing but a plain list of blue title links. A variety of visual elements appear alongside them, such as answer boxes, clusters of related questions, maps, rows of images, and groups of videos. These special elements that go beyond the standard organic results are collectively known as SERP features.

The distinction matters here. A SERP (Search Engine Results Page) refers to the entire page of results a search engine returns for a single query, while a SERP feature is an individual block that makes up that page. In other words, a single SERP can simultaneously contain several SERP features such as a Featured Snippet, PAA, and a Local Pack.

SERP features are a channel for capturing extra visibility and clicks. According to an Ahrefs study of 2 million featured snippets, featured snippets appear for roughly 12.29% of all queries and capture about 8.6% of the clicks those searches generate. The same study found that 99.58% of the time Google only surfaced pages already ranking in the top 10 as featured snippets. In other words, winning a SERP feature is a strategy for stacking additional exposure on top of an existing ranking.

Because the Local Pack only surfaces the top three businesses, competition is fierce for local businesses, and a Google Business Profile plus consistent NAP (name, address, phone) data serve as key signals (Semrush). Knowledge Panels consolidate trusted entity-level information, so organization schema and consistent source management influence whether you appear (Moz, Semrush).

Execution Checklist

  • Inspect the current SERP for your target query to see which SERP features actually appear.
  • For featured snippets, structure content to match the format currently shown (paragraph, list, or table), use the question as a subheading, and answer it concisely right beneath.
  • Reflect PAA questions as subheadings in your content and provide direct, format-matched answers.
  • If you are targeting the Local Pack, keep your Google Business Profile up to date and build NAP citations and reviews.
  • For image and video features, apply descriptive file names, alt text, and ImageObject/VideoObject schema.
  • For rich snippets and knowledge panels, add the appropriate structured data (schema markup) and confirm it with a validation tool.
  • For pages targeting a featured snippet, first lift their baseline ranking into the top 10 for the query.
